News > February 17, 2009 - A "Big Lift" puts a new chiller on Kinetic’s roof

Part of our construction process includes some upgrades and improvements to our existing buildings. All of our grinders access several central filters and coolant systems. For cooling we ran city water though heat exchangers in the filters. Our Project Engineer, Paul Lewandowski, did some price comparisons of our water costs versus the cost of a roof top chiller. According to Paul: "The payback was only several years and we would not be wasting clean water to do the job". There was only one problem: while the chiller was relatively light - 2200 pounds (821 kilos) - it being located on an area of our 1970 roof that was a distance away – 130 feet (40 meters) - from the best spot to locate a crane to install it. So Paul called our friends at Industrial Erecting and said: "We need a crane; no we need a real big crane".

While every rigger swears that the word "drop" is not part of their vocabulary safety dictated that as the chiller was being lowered in place Paul Lewandowski had all Kinetic employees out of the area under the lift area. A safety measure that was not needed as the riggers safely lowered the chiller into place. And in a few weeks Kinetic will be eliminating the use of city water and using the new chiller to cool our filtration units!
