News > November 15, 2009 – Kinetic installs new EDM Machine Makino U86 EDM MachineThe Kinetic Co. made a huge leap in its EDM capabilities with the addition of a Makino U86 EDM machine. In 1999 Kinetic bought a used Mitsubishi EDM machine; we were learning how to use an EDM machine. We didn’t know how much use we would have for one so the decision was made to buy a good used machine and see how much demand we would have for it. We were pleasantly surprised; the machine very quickly was running daily. However; we had a problem. The Mitsubishi was too small for many of the products Kinetic makes. We had to slide the parts and since this was not a “submerged” type of EDM machine “burning” took a long time. After a lengthy investigation we selected the Makino U86 which is the largest submergible machine in the Makino U-series line. We can use it both as a submerged and a non-submerged EDM. If you are into specs this is what we can do and the tolerances we can hold with this new EMD machine: It provides axis travel of 31.5” [800mm] x 23.6” [600mm] x 12.6/19.7” [320mm/500mm]. U & V axis travel of 3.976” [100mm]. It gives us a maximum taper angle of 15 degrees with an option to go to +/- 45 degrees. The table working area is 48.0” [1219mm] x 35.8” [909mm] with a max load of 6,600 lbs [2464 kilos]. The accuracy (positioning) is +/- 0.000080” [2 microns] with repeatability at +/- 0.000059” [1.5 microns]. As we say at Kinetic: “That’s close enough for friends!”
